Easy Air Fryer Chicken {just 3 ingredients}

This easy air fryer chicken is a go-to at our house. It’s done fast and we usually make it with just 3 ingredients (but you can easily change up the seasoning).

If you don’t have an air fryer you can cook it on the stove in a skillet as well. I just love how juicy and tender the chicken ends up being when cooked in an air fryer and I don’t have to wash a pan!

Pair it with a few sides like rice and a vegetable and you can have a quick and healthy meal on the table in under 30 minutes.

We make this recipe almost weekly. We change it up by adding different sides to go with it. Sometimes it’s rice and veggies, other times we have macaroni & cheese since my girls love that.

You can also serve it with flavored rice, mashed potatoes, or a pasta side.

I usually use the reduced sodium version of the seasoning.

What kind of chicken to use

You can use any kind of boneless chicken for this recipe. Personally, we usually do tenders as we have 2 small children so we work with small portions.

If you use breasts I recommend the thin sliced as they are generally a more even thickness and will cook more quickly.

All my air fryer recipes are made in a Cuisinart TOA-60. Timing may vary slightly based upon your particular air fryer so watch closely the first time you make any new recipe.

How to Make this recipe

As advertised this recipe is super quick and simple.

1 – Start by placing your chicken on a plate or in a dish. (Don’t season it on your air fryer basket or pan as you don’t want too much liquid in there.)

2 – Coat the chicken in a thin layer of Italian dressing, you can use olive oil if you don’t have the dressing.

3 – Next sprinkle liberally with the montreal steak seasoning. I’ve never actually measured how much I use.

If you have kids you may want to make their pieces of chicken with a lighter amount of seasoning.

4 – Flip the chicken pieces over and repeat the coating of italian dressing and seasoning.

5 – I place a piece of foil over the tray for my air fryer then lay the chicken in a single layer on top of it.

If your air fryer only has a basket just place the chicken in a single layer right in the basket.

6 – Air fry the chicken at 375. It may be ready in as little as 10 minutes if you are cooking tenders. It will take 12-15 minutes for full size chicken breasts, perhaps a couple minutes longer for thick chicken breasts.

Flip the chicken over halfway through the cooking time.

If you have an air fryer that also does convection bake I generally use that setting and then switch to air fry the last few minutes if I want it to have a bit of firmer outer coating.

7 – Once the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 it’s done. Remove it from the air fryer and allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Make it in a skillet

Don’t have an air fryer? No problem. You can cook the chicken in a skillet as well.

Prep the chicken the same way.

Put a little olive oil in your pan and turn the heat to medium high. Once it’s heated up place your chicken in the skillet. Sear it on both sides then turn the heat down to medium and put a lid on top to keep the moisture in.

Cook until it reaches an interanl temperature of 165, it will take 10-20 minutes depending on the type of chicken you use and how thick it is.

Make it even faster

Want your meal on the table even faster. Marinate (add all the seasonings) to the chicken the night before or in the morning before you leave for work, errands, etc.

Keep the chicken in the fridge until you’re ready to cook it.

When you get home simply transfer it to the air fryer and follow the cooking instructions. The chicken will be ready to eat in about 15 minutes.

How to reduce sodium

This recipe is already fairly low in sodium. You can reduce it more by using olive oil, not Italian dressing. You won’t sacrifice too much flavor and olive oil is just about sodium-free.

You can also replace the montreal chicken seasoning completely with a salt free option like Mrs. Dash garlic & herb. The seasonings are exactly the same but they are similar and your chicken will still be tasty and flavorful.

How to reduce calories

The chicken in this recipe is already pretty low in calories. Keep the calorie count low for the meal by serving it with plain white or brown rice and vegetables.

Sprinkle the vegetables with some of the montreal chicken seasoning for a little extra flavor.
